Heading into Monday’s home game with Show Low the Bulldog baseball team was on the edge of getting to play at home for the 3A state play-in game on Friday. Winslow was ranked 16th on Sunday with Monday’s game left as well as the Holbrook game, which was suspended on Friday due to weather. That game was concluded on Tuesday in Holbrook. Unless the Bulldogs can win both games, they will most likely be on the road for the play-in game on Friday. If they can win both contests they could possibly host that play-in game. Seeds nine through 16 will host teams seeded 17th through 24th on Friday to see which teams qualify for the final 16-team state tournament bracket.
Winslow headed into Monday ranked 16th, fractional points ahead of both Yuma Catholic and Pusch Ridge. They were even closer to number 15 Blue Ridge and could overtake the Yellowjackets if things worked out right and they won both of their final two games.
After having their game in Holbrook suspended until Tuesday, the Bulldogs traveled to Flagstaff on Saturday where they fell 13-1 in five innings to the 4A Eagles. Flagstaff scored 12 runs through the first three frames and didn’t allow a Bulldog score until their lone run in the top of the fifth.
Winslow had just three hits in the loss. Brennen Sawyer went 1 for 2; AJ Huerta, 1 for 3; and Welden Gamber, 1 for 2.
Dylan Vargas pitched 2.2 innings giving up 12 runs on eight hits with four walks. Solomon Setalla worked 1.1 innings allowing one run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.
The final 3A play-in match ups will be determined by Wednesday morning. The State tournament begins on May 4 with all games played in the Valley.
