Holbrook’s softball team dropped their third region game on Friday with a 13-3 setback on the road at Show Low.
Holbrook scored one in the first, but went on to give up nine Show Low runs before scoring again with two runs in the fourth. Show Low matched those two runs ending the game in five innings under the 10-run mercy rule.
“Overall we didn’t play bad but there were a few things that didn’t go our way. A couple of base running mistakes and timely hitting from Show Low all played a part in the 10 run loss. Good teams take advantage of any little edge they can get and that’s exactly what happened to us in this game. We left eight runners on base so we were finding ways to get on. We just struggled to get those runners across. We really have to focus and recover to get another region win in Snowflake on Tuesday (April 17), so we can finish the season strong heading into the playoffs.” said head Roadrunner Coach Scott Baker.
Holbrook finished with just six hits against Cougar pitching. Canela Queiruga had two of those going 2 for 3, with a double; Madison Chappell went 1 for 3, with a double; Kallee Reidhead was 1 for 3; Carla Plumb, 1 for 2; and Destany Begay, 1 for 2.
Rayanna Yellowhair pitched two and one-third innings giving up four runs on five hits with a strikeout. Plumb worked two innings allowing nine runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts and walked two.
With the loss, Holbrook dropped to 11-4 in regular season games leaving them ranked seventh at the onset of the week. After playing at Snowflake on Tuesday, they will host Winslow on Friday. On Monday, they close out the regular season on the road at Payson. If Holbrook can maintain their position inside the top eight in the final rankings they would get a first round bye in the state tournament. If they fall to eighth or below they would be involved in the state play-in games, which are played at the site of the higher seed on April 25.
