Softball 2 Holbrook

Holbrook had their seven game winning streak snapped last week dropping two of three games played. The softball team entered Tuesday’s game at Winslow ranked second in the 3A rankings but that didn’t deter the Bulldogs who sent Holbrook packing with a 12-3 loss, their first setback since Feb. 28.

Winslow broke a scoreless tie in the second with three runs. They pushed their lead to 5-0 in the third, and led 7-1 after four. Holbrook cut the lead to four runs in the fifth but that was as close as they would get.

Winslow’s Jordyn Johnson held Holbrook to just four hits in the game. Kallee Reidhead went 1 for 3; Canela Queiruga was 1 for 2, with a home run; Makenzi Thompson, 1 for 3; and Carla Plumb was 1 for 3.

Rayanna Yellowhair worked four and one-third innings, giving up 12 runs on 13 hits with one strikeout. Carla Plumb worked one and two-third innings with a strikeout and one walk.

Hosting Payson on Friday afternoon, the Lady Roadrunners bats were silenced by Payson pitching. Holbrook had just one hit, that from Reidhead in the 10-0 six-inning shut-out loss.

Payson’s pitcher Kalea Smith worked six innings giving up just the one hit. She struck out 13 of the 21 Holbrook batters she faced.

Holbrook’s pitcher Destany Begay pitched five innings giving up eight runs on 10 hits with a pair of strikeouts and two walks. Plumb pitched one inning giving up two runs with a strikeout and four walks.

Holbrook bounced back from the two earlier losses of the week with a 4-0 shut out win over visiting Chinle on Saturday afternoon.

The Roadrunners scored once in the third, added two more in the fifth and one in the sixth of the defensive game.

Holbrook finished with only nine hits but made the most of their chances. Jovon Boling went 3 for 3, with a home run and three RBI. Hailey Guttery was 1 for 1, with a double; Makenzi Thompson went 2 for 3; Aiyana Gary, 1 for 3; and Kendra Monroe, 1 for 2.

Plumb got the win in the circle working all seven innings. She gave up only four hits with seven strikeouts and walked five Chinle batters.

“Our second week of region games didn’t go nearly as well as the first. Rayanna, Destany and Carla all pitched exceptionally well, especially considering the level of our competition. Our defense fell apart at times and we really struggled at the plate against the good pitchers we saw from Winslow and Payson. Luckily we were able to bounce back and squeeze out a victory against a tough Chinle team to finish out the week. Jovon and Hailey were the main sources of our offense in that game and it couldn’t have come at a better time. We’ll be looking for a huge bounce back week to stay within the top 10 of the 3A rankings,” said Coach Scott Baker.

With the two losses Holbrook fell from second, to fifth in the rankings heading into this week. Holbrook played another Saturday morning game against the Winslow Bulldogs, but the score was not available by press time. After hosting Blue Ridge in a double-header on Monday the Lady Roadrunners will travel to Show Low on Friday and next Tuesday they play at Snowflake. Holbrook is 9-3 heading into this week’s games.
