The annual meeting of the Navajo County Historical Society is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, in the Route 66 Auditorium at the Historic Courthouse. The public is invited to attend and learn more about the Historical Society and its responsibility to the community as the caretakers of the museum exhibit objects, original photographs and documents. In addition, the society maintains a research library and staffs the official Arizona Visitors’ Center. Throughout the year different organizations and groups utilize the Historic Courthouse grounds and meeting facilities as scheduled with the reception desk. Several wedding ceremonies have been conducted at the courthouse over the years, and most recently teen court has resumed the use of the courtroom. The society also works with the City of Holbrook and Navajo County to serve as the caretaker of the Historic Courthouse. Currently the goal of the board of directors is to help with cost-sharing dollars for a new roof to replace the one that was installed in 1929. All membership dues this year have been earmarked for the roof fund with $1,700 to date added, which includes a $1,000 life membership. In 2017 the society had new floor tile laid in the public restrooms’ area, windows caulked and are now having the light fixture bulbs changed over to LED that will reduce the operation cost for the city and county. The annual meeting will include a complete report of the above activities as well as the annual business meeting that covers the election of governing board members by the society’s membership. The board of director terms of Trudy Bender, JoLynn Fox, Betty Heward, Kathleen Smith and Nicole Young are expiring. The terms of the balance of the board directors will expire in 2020, and include Leann Baker, Mary Bragg, Darlene Brinkerhoff, Jill Diemer, William Fee, Richard Peterson and D.V. Stuart. Persons who are interested in serving a three-year term on the board of directors may pick up a letter of interest application from the visitors’ desk at the courthouse or stop by the Historical Society office located in the annex weekday mornings. Volunteers are welcome as there are always cleaning tasks and archival processing work. For more information as to how you may be involved as a volunteer contact the Historical Society office at 524-6558 or stop by.
