The Roadrunners had just two games during their spring break and both came on the same day with a trip to Page on Tuesday for a double header. Despite the long bus ride, Holbrook was able to get both wins taking the first game 4-1 and dominating the second game of the twin bill 21-4.
The first game saw both teams score once in the first inning and that score held until the third. Holbrook managed single runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings then played solid defense behind Jalen Nez who earned the win on the hill.
The Birds scattered eight hits led by Cole McDaniel who went 3 for 4 with a double and scored three of the four runs. Nez helped himself by going 1 for 3 and scored once; Ryan Short was 2 for 3 with an RBI; Santibanez went 1 for 3; and Justin Perkins was 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI.
Nez worked all seven innings giving up just one run and two hits with nine strikeouts and walked only two of the 25 batters he faced.
The second game went Holbrook’s way early with the road team scoring 11 runs through three innings before Page countered with three in the home half of the third. Leading 13-4 through five innings, Holbrook put the game away with an eight run sixth.
The Birds pounded out 25 hits against an inferior Page pitching staff led by Frankie Ulibarri who went 5 for 6. Brady Buckley had two doubles, and Perkins, Ulibarri, Michael Queiruga, Gabe Gabaldon and Perkins each had doubles in the win.
Ulibarri pitched four innings giving up four runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and walked two. Cole McDaniel worked two innings allowing no runs on three hits with one strikeout.
With the two wins Holbrook improved their season mark to 10-2. Their regular season record stands at 6-1. After returning to action on Tuesday hosting Round Valley, the Roadrunners will play their second east region game of the season with a trip to Blue Ridge on Friday. Next Tuesday they host Show Low.
