Softball 2 Holbrook

Holbrook saw plenty of action last weekend at the Colorado River Invitational tournament. The Lady Roadrunners split their six games played with three wins and three losses.

The team opened the tournament on Thursday afternoon with a 6-0 loss to Boulder City, Nev. The Eagles scored two runs in each of the first two innings then added another pair of runs in the fourth. The pitchers kept Holbrook bats silent in the shut out win. Holbrook had just one hit in the game, which came from Madison Chappell. Rayanna Yellowhair took the loss in the circle pitching four innings and giving up six runs on nine hits.

Later on Thursday afternoon the team bounced back with a 14-4 win over Legacy, Nev. Holbrook got their bats working in the first inning where they scored four runs. They added three more in the second and put the game out of reach with seven runs in the third frame of the four inning game.

Holbrook’s first game on Friday was a 5-2 loss to Pale Verde Valley. The Yellowjackets scored once in the first, only to have Holbrook catch and pass them with two runs in the bottom of the third. That lead wouldn’t hold up with Palo Verde scoring four runs in the top of the fifth and final inning to get the three run win.

Holbrook’s second game on Friday was a tough 8-0 loss to Williams. The Vikings came out hot scoring four runs in the first then scored in each of the following three innings to get the shut out win. Holbrook hitters struggled in the loss.

Saturday morning those bats came to life in a 16-11 win over Needles, Calif. The Roadrunners scored four in the bottom of the first then fell way behind after giving up 11 runs to the California team in the top of the third. As quickly as they gave up the lead, they fought back with 12 runs in the bottom of the third to secure the five run win.

Holbrook’s final game of the tournament was a 12-5 win over Cathedral City from Calif. Both teams scored well in the first combing for eight runs with Holbrook leading 5-3. The Lions pulled within one run with a single score in the top of the second, only to see Holbrook put the game out of reach with seven second inning runs.

“All weekend long our pitching and defense was pretty good. It was actually good enough for us to have a chance in each game we played. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for our hitting. We faced a good pitcher from Boulder City and struggled. The second game against Legacy was their third game of the day and we were able to take advantage of them running out of pitchers.

“On day two we really struggled at the plate in both games. We hit the ball hard a few times but right at people. Due to our loss with Williams we were taken out of bracket play and we played two other teams outside of bracket play. If it wasn’t for two errors in the last inning of the game with Needles we would have only given up six runs on Saturday. Our bats finally came alive that day as well. I think every player was able to successfully play a role for us this weekend. Hopefully we will be able to make the best of this opportunity to get us on track for our tough region games,” said Head Coach Scott Baker.

After hosting Page in a double-header contest on Tuesday, the team will be off for a week before hosting Round Valley on March 20 after they return from Spring break. Holbrook is 8-6 overall and 2-1 in power point games heading into this week’s action.
