It took a while for the Lady Roadrunners to get started but eventually they bounced back from Saturday’s loss to Page with a 63-23 win over visiting Show Low on Tuesday night. Madison Chappell was about the only Lady Bird to get going early in the game netting 10 first period points pacing Holbrook to a 19-8 first period advantage. Holbrook was sluggish in the second but still extended their lead to 34-15 at the half. Elena Smith hit a pair of three-point shots and Tyanna Johnson added one from distance as well. Holbrook came out strong early in the third with pressure defense and quickly grew the margin to 30 points. Several steals by teammates resulted in Tyler Pacheco netting all 12 of her game points in the first few minutes of the quarter as Holbrook’s edge grew to 51-21 with eight minutes to play. With the running clock in place Johnson and Shilaine Gorman counted for nine of the home teams 13 in the final frame. “Madi started well for us early, but we really didn’t play all that well as a team especially on the defensive end of the court. Dakota scored consistently throughout the game, but we seemed hesitant to shoot the ball until the second half. I liked our third period beginning, which is the way we need to play for a full 32 minutes to reach our goal against the teams we will see in the state tournament,” commented Coach Greg Perkins. Holbrook was led by Chappell and Pacheco with 12 each. Dakota Dick added 9; Johnson, 8; Tristen Ambrose, 7; Smith, 6; Gorman, 5; Twyla Clark, 4; and Rayanna helped with a single free throw. Collectively the Birds finished with six three-point shots and went 12 for 20 at the charity stripe. Show Low was led by Breanna Cooper with 12 points. Megan Reidhead and Cody Watson both had 4; Lisa McVeigh, 2; and Alexis Allred added 1. The Cougars made two treys, and went three for 16 at the line. With the win, the Roadrunners picked up their 20th win of the season against just four losses. They are now 12-2 in regular season games, and entered Tuesday’s game ranked 3rd in 3A. After hosting Snowflake on Jan. 26, the team traveled to face a streaking Chinle team on the 27th. On Tuesday they traveled to Winslow to face the rival Bulldogs.
