Needing wins in the stretch run of the season to move into the top 24 in the overall rankings and secure a spot in the state tournament field, the Lady Lobos picked up two big ones last week.
Hosting Blue Ridge on Tuesday night, Snowflake started well against the struggling Yellowjackets outscoring them 17-9 in the first. Blue Ridge fought back in the second and went to the half with Snowflake on top 26-23. Both teams really struggled to score in the second half combing for a total of 25 points but enough of those fell on the Snowflake side for them to win 38-34.
Nikita Olms scored nearly half her team’s points finishing with 17. Camaria Reidhead added 8; Kaylee Coplan, 5; Emily Ballard, Bailee Flake, Trysten Hancock and Shelby Larson each netted 2 in the win.
Hosting higher ranked Winslow on Friday night the Lobos repeated last year’s feat with a home court upset win over the Lady Bulldogs. Snowflake’s defense got the job done in the first eight minutes holding Winslow to just a single point in the first period. The Lobos scored well in the second building a 27-11 halftime lead. Winslow battled back in the third holding Snowflake to only four points. In the fourth period both teams scored well but Snowflake held on to win the game 47-40 giving them a much needed power point win.
Flake led the team in scoring with 10 points. Reidhead added 8; Ballard, 7; Taryn Flake, 6; Olms, 4; Hancock, 4; Coplan, 3; Larson, 3; and Heather Whipple helped with 2.
Snowflake entered this week ranked 22nd in the 3A rankings. After hosting Payson on Tuesday, they will play at Round Valley on Thursday then will travel to face highly ranked Holbrook on Friday.
