Holbrook improved their regular season mark to 4-0 with a 61-48 home court win over Chinle on Tuesday night at Munoz Gym. Playing their first home game of the year at that venue the Lady Birds started well, jumping out to a quick 4-0 following Elena Smith’s three-point bomb. That propelled the team to a 16-13 first period advantage. In the second, Madison Chappell drained six points and Tyler Pacheco hit the first of two treys keeping Holbrook on top 29-26 at the intermission. Holbrook stepped up their defense in the third period where they outscored the Lady Wildcats 17-8 building a double-digit lead. Dakota Dick, Pacheco, Smith and Chappell each contributed points in the quarter. In the final stanza Chinle cut the lead to 10 points on a couple of occasions but they never got closer. “Overall we played a fairly solid game. They got into the paint on us in the first half and I thought we did a much better job of protecting that area in the second half. Dakota played well for us pushing the ball at the right times, and Madison and Tyler were solid as well. Elena always gives us an outside threat, as do Rayanna and Tyanna,” stated Coach Greg Perkins. “Each night at least one of those girls has to come through and all three hit from the outside in this game. I thought our second half defense was really the key to the game and the win. The girls did a good job on the defensive end of the court. Chinle is a good team, and its always nice to pick up a home court win,” he added. Chappell led all scorers in the game with 21 points. Dick added 12; Pacheco, 10; Smith, 8; Rayanna Wauneka, 7; and Tyanna Johnson hit one three-point shot. Holbrook went to the line nine times converting seven. They also connected on six three-point shots. Chinle was led by Stacey Begay with 14 points. Amanda Antone added 12 and Grayce Claw had 11. The Wildcats made two three-point shots and went six for seven at the line. With the win the Lady Roadrunners improved to 7-2 overall on the season. After hosting Blue Ridge on Friday night they will travel to Monument Valley tonight (Wednesday, Dec. 20), in their final game prior to Christmas. The Lady Birds will play in the Chandler Prep Tournament held Dec. 28-30 in Chandler.
