The Roadrunners have put together a nice tournament win/loss record after going 6-1 at the Round Valley Tournament over the weekend. Holbrook finished the tournament in 3rd place overall. In their two tournaments this year the Roadrunners are now 10-1. However, in regular season power point contests they are 0-2.

First up for the Roadrunners on Thursday was a 46-38 win over St. Johns. Terrence Kelly netted 14 and Tynen Thomas hit double figures with 10. Their next pool play game on Thursday resulted in a 55-17 dominating win over Mogollon. Freshmen Anthony Nelson finished with 12, and Thomas added a second 10-point game in the win.

Holbrook started bracket play on Friday with a 60-57 win over Morenci. Tyrell Nelson nailed four three-point shots as part of his team high 14 points. Jared Wood also hit four from distance scoring 12 in the win.

With that win they advanced on the bracket to face Thatcher coming away with a 59-47 win. Kelly led the way with 12 points. Jared Woody helped with 10.

That win put Holbrook into the semi-final game on Saturday morning. Holbrook struggled with their performance in that contest and eventually fell to the Eagles 51-40, missing out on their chance to play in the championship game. Woody and Kelly each netted 11 in the loss.

With the loss, the Birds dropped in the bracket where they met up with Thatcher for the second time in two days. Holbrook won the first meeting by 12 points and nearly duplicated that effort with a 10-point win the second time around at 74-64.

Eric Baldonado had the game of the tournament for Holbrook finishing with 26 points. Anthony Nelson also played well in the win with 15 points.

With the win the Roadrunners moved on to face Safford in the 3rd and 4th place game. Safford had defeated Holbrook in the regular season just last Saturday but this time Holbrook got the one point win at 54-53. The Roadrunners had built a 12-point lead through three periods, then withstood a furious rally by the Bulldogs in the fourth to preserve the one point victory.

Holbrook had four players finish in double figures led by Baldonado’s 20-point effort. Jaren Jackson netted 13, and Kelly helped with 11.

Holbrook heads into Tuesday’s home game with a visiting Chinle with a 10-3 overall record. On Friday, the Birds will see Blue Ridge for the first time when the Jackets make a visit to Munoz Gym. Holbrook will play their final game prior to the Christmas break on Dec. 20, with a trip to Monument Valley to face the Mustangs.
