This week three of the four area teams will be in action and all three will be on the road, with the closest game played in Flagstaff. Winslow travels to take on Coconino, Joseph City will be at Williams and Holbrook will venture to Page. Snowflake played in the zero week and now has a bye.
Winslow takes its unbeaten streak to Flagstaff to meet up with a 1-3 Panther team, who are coming off their third straight loss. Coconino defeated Page in week one by a touchdown, while the Bulldogs took down Page a week later by 20 points. Despite this game being played in the Panthers’ home, the Bulldogs should have enough to move to 5-0 as they look ahead to next week’s game with Snowflake.
Joseph City travels to Williams to take on a Viking team, which soundly defeated the Wildcats last year 70-14 in Joseph City. This season the Cats dropped their first game, but have since won three straight. Williams enters the game with a 2-2 mark after losing at Mogollon last week 34-29. Last year the Vikings passed for nearly 300 yards in their big win over Joseph City with a junior quarterback doing the damage. Assuming he has returned as a senior, the Cats could have their hands full while trying to win their fourth straight.
Holbrook has won two straight to improve to 2-2 on the season. Last year the Roadrunners won just two games total, with Page being their second and final win. Holbrook defeated the Sand Devils 34-16 at Roadrunner Stadium. Page is 3-2 this season, and like Holbrook, has won two straight. Page opened the season with an impressive 40-7 win at Blue Ridge, Holbrook’s next opponent. The Sand Devils also fell to Winslow by 20 in week two. The Birds will need to keep their ground attack operating at full force to have a chance to move their win streak to three games. The outcome of this game may also be an indicator of what the Roadrunners will face next week when they host Blue Ridge for Homecoming.
Snowflake is idle this week after defeating Safford 13-10 last week to move to 3-2. The Lobos are looking ahead to opening East Region play next week when they travel to Winslow to take on what may well be an undefeated Bulldog team.
The other three area teams kick off at 7 o’clock on Friday evening, Sept. 22.
