The East Region sent five teams into the 16-team 3A state baseball bracket and only two of those five teams advanced past the first round. Unfortunately for Snowflake’s Lobos, they met up with region foe Payson in the second round, which is where their season ended.
The 10th seeded Lobos upset seventh seeded Casteel in the first round last Friday afternoon, upending the Colts 9-5.
That win put them up against second seeded and East Region champion Payson. The Longhorns survived a scare from No. 15 Chinle in the first round, getting past the Wildcats 3-2. That close call may have awakened the Longhorns at the wrong time for Snowflake.
Payson easily handled the Lobos Saturday afternoon, defeating them 12-2 to bring an end to their season.
The Lobos finished the season with an overall record of 17-13.
