A free two-part disaster planning workshop on the recovery of historic or valued documents, photos or other items from incidents of disaster will be hosted on Monday, May 15, by the Navajo County Historical Society Museum in Holbrook.
The first portion of the workshop will be an online, 1½-hour webinar covering prevention and preparedness, which should be completed by participants prior to the May 15 session.
The second, in-person workshop will be hands-on-training slated from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 15 at the museum’s Rt. 66 Auditorium, located at 100 E. Arizona St.
Randy Silverman, head of preservation at the University of Utah, will be the instructor of the free workshop sponsored by the Western States and Territories Preservation Assistance Service.
Workshop participants will learn how to complete a disaster response and a collection salvage plan, train staff to implement the plan effectively, set pre- and post-action priorities for collections, understand practical decision-making skills needed during an emergency, and experience salvage procedures for books, documents, photos and objects.
Those who work in preservation areas, such as museums or libraries, or members of the public interested in the preservation of personal family collections can benefit from this training.
Registration for the free sessions is required by Monday, May 8, online at http://tinyurl.com/ot4kve2 or by emailing Wendy Cao at caow@plsinfo.org.
To obtain a flyer on the workshop, or general information concerning the facilities, which are handicapped accessible, call the museum mornings at (928) 524-6558.
