The first time the Lady Wildcats faced St. Johns on March 21 they were soundly beaten 11-1, getting just one hit. When they played the Lady Redskins again last Tuesday they fell again, but this time they finished with nine hits and lost the game in 17-16 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
A scoreless first frame led to the second where the Lady Cats opened the scoring with one run. St. Johns answered right back with four runs. Joseph City trimmed the lead to 4-3 with a pair of third inning runs, but in the home half of the third the Redskins opened up a big margin, scoring six runs to lead 10-3.
In the top of the fifth Joseph City quickly erased that deficit, scoring seven runs to briefly tie the game. St. Johns edged in front by one heading to the sixth. In the top of the penultimate inning Joseph City caught and surpassed the home team with three runs. St. Johns battled back to once again knot the game at 13-13 going into the seventh.
It looked like the Wildcats would avenge that earlier loss as they scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, St. Johns had other ideas and countered those three runs with four in the bottom of the seventh to win the wild game by one run.
That close game may have taken the steam out of the Wildcats, who lost at home to Chinle on Thursday by a final of 18-4 to fall to 2-4 in power point contests.
After playing at Williams on Tuesday, the Wildcats will host Alchesay in a doubleheader contest on Thursday. Next Tuesday they play rival Mogollon at Heber.
Despite their 2-4 record, the Cats entered this week ranked 11th in power points. If they can remain in the top 16 in the final month of the season they could potentially qualify for the post-season.
