Photo courtesy of the Old Trails MuseumIn the early days the young railroader created rivalries with the other railroad towns. They formed football and baseball teams, calling themselves the Blue Devils, the Cardinals and the Meteorites. Rather than play on grass fields they played in dirt fields and rode the train to places like Ash Fork and Williams to compete. This photo is of the Santa Fe apprentice football team in Winslow in 1927. Among those on the team were Ted McBride, Ray Blumlein, Bill Miley and Manuel Sandoval.
