The best sporting event of them all will begin this week. There is no more exciting or harder to predict event than the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship Tournament, commonly known as March Madness. There are at least three teams from the PAC 12 that are really good enough to win the national championship, all of which should be in those selected to participate. It is doubtful that any of them will be one of the four top seeds. Arizona, UCLA and Oregon are all among the best teams in the country. The Arizona Wildcats won the conference title and might have a shot at a one seed but probably will be a second seed. The other two will be lower but probably not by much. All three have some of the best players you will see anywhere and could win the title even if they did not win the conference championship. The likely top seeds as seen here and they will have been selected before this column is printed are probably Villanova, the Atlantic Coast Conference champion, Gonzaga and probably Kansas. Some others that might be rated that highly are Kentucky and the Big 10 champion, which will likely be Michigan. Lots of us basketball fans will be hard to get away from our television sets until this tournament is over. It is better than the World Series or the Super Bowl for my money. The NBA championship doesn’t come close. The team that is my favorite is Arizona. They have had games where they looked good enough to win it all and then they had a game like their loss to Oregon. They have one of the best players in the game and he is just a freshman. Arizona won two huge games when they beat UCLA on Friday and Oregon on Saturday. That should put them in better shape than the Ducks or the Bruins. This was a good year in basketball for both Winslow and Holbrook. The Winslow Bulldog boys came in second in the state and the Holbrook Lady Roadrunners had an excellent season. It was good to see both of those teams do well.
