After defeating Winslow for the second time on Tuesday night of last week, the Lady Roadrunners were hoping to upset second ranked Page the next night when the Lady Sand Devils made a visit to Holbrook. Both teams were sluggish in the early going as Page held a 10-3 first period lead. In the second Page doubled up the Birds and led 26-11 at the break. Holbrook’s offensive woes continued in the third period with just one field goal. The fourth period went much the same way as the first three as Page cruised to a 55-25 win. “We struggled to score early in the game and just like the game in Page earlier, we struggled with their defense. We will need to get past our mental block against this team if we want to reach this year’s goal,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “They play great half-court defense and we need to replicate that in practice to be able to handle it in games. “Too many turnovers and too many missed scoring opportunities early really put us out of the game early. Page is very good, no question, but we are better than we showed in this game.” Last Thursday the Roadrunners found their game once again and posted a 52-35 win over Monument Valley on Senior Night. The Lady Mustangs had lost to Page by just three points earlier, but Holbrook shot the ball well early and seemed to settled down after the good quick start. Holbrook led by six after the first and by double digits after a well played second period. A strong defense held the Mustangs to just six points in the third and the Roadrunners went on to win the game. Ariyana Pratt led Holbrook with 13 points. Madison Chappell added 10; Shoshawnna Jack and Rayanna Wauneka, 8 each; Twyla Clark and Alishea Kee, 5 each; and Tyanna Smith, 3. “It was good to see the girls bounce back after the Page loss. Senior Night has traditionally been a tough game for us over the years and Monument Valley had been battling the North teams to some close games in the past two weeks,” said the coach. “I thought our seniors, Ariyana, Alishea, Dishie and Sho, really got us off to a good start. Each one of those girls will be missed next season, but they still have a lot of work left to do this season. I look forward to what comes in the next couple of weeks with this entire group of girls. They can be a special group if they put in the work.” Holbrook’s final regular season game was played last Friday in Payson, where another quick start led to a 37-8 halftime lead and a 49-28 final result. The Birds scorched the nets for 26 points in the first eight minutes with five three-point shots, three from Tyler Pacheco. With the game in hand the scoring slowed in the second half as Holbrook rested several players who had put in a long week. Chappell netted seven points in about a three-minute stretch in the third before leaving the game for good with a game high 12 points. Pacheco added 9; Pratt, 7; Dishie Kinlicheenie, 6 on two three-point shots in the first half; Clark and Smith, 4 each; Dakota Dick, Jack and Kee, 2 each; and Tristen Ambrose, 1. With the wins, Holbrook ended the regular season with an overall record of 22-5. The Roadruners are the East Region regular season champions, and will host either No. 4 Blue Ridge or No. 5 Payson on Thursday evening, Feb. 9. A win there would put them in the championship game on Friday night, which would also be in Holbrook. The Roadrunners won the region with an unbeaten mark of 10-0. Winslow placed second, Snowflake was third, Blue Ridge was fourth, Payson was fifth and Show Low was sixth. None of the region tournament games will have an impact on the power point rankings. Teams will be playing for bragging rights and nothing more, other than a chance to stay sharp for the state tourney. Holbrook should enter the state tournament as either the fourth or fifth overall seed, and will get a first round bye in the state tournament, which begins on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The second round games will be played on Friday, Feb. 17, which is when the Lady Birds will debut in the state tournament. The site of that contest will be determined by first round results.
