The Holbrook Lady Roadrunners bounced back from their Jan. 14 loss to Valley Christian with a workmanlike effort in a win over Payson three nights later. The visiting Lady Longhorns held the size advantage and caused Holbrook some problems early, but by the end of the game the Roadrunners came out on top 58-36. Tyler Pacheco and Madison Chappell led the way early, netting 13 of Holbrook’s 15 first quarter points. In the second period Pacheco and Twyla Clark each made three-point shots, extending the Holbrook lead to 27-14 at the break. The Roadrunners played better in the third, outscoring the Longhorns 21-9 and moving the lead to nearly 30 points with one quarter left. In the final frame Payson outscored Holbrook by three, but the damage had been done. Pacheco led the team in scoring with 11 points. Chappell added 10; Elena Smith, 8; Rayanna Wauneka, 7; Ariyana Pratt, 5; Aiyana Gary, 4; Clark, 3; and Megan Cummings, Dishie Kinlicheenie, Shoshawnna Jack, Alishea Kee and Tyanna Smith, 2 each. Holbrook made five three-point shots and improved their free throw shooting from recent games by going 7 for 11 at the line. “I thought we struggled early against their zone, but finally got some shots to start dropping,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “Their size gave them a big advantage on rebounds, but I felt we did a decent job on the boards. It was great to see Dishie get more aggressive with the ball, which is one of the many things we need to improve on. “Overall there wasn’t much flashy about this win, but it was a region win and keeps us in first place in the region and in the top 10 in the rankings.” With the win the Roadrunners improved their season mark to 16-4 and 6-0 in East Region games. They are 8-3 in power point contests and entered the game ranked seventh.
