The Holbrook Roadrunner basketball team will be young and inexperienced this season with nine first year varsity players on the roster. Only two players return from last year’s team, which advanced to the second round of the state tournament. Veterans Elliot Pete and Hayden Kinlichee will be joined by Kory McReeves, Lane Goldtooth, Tynen Thomas, Jaden John, Terrence Kelly, Jaren Jackson, Tyrell Nelson, J.E. Cummings and Kyen Attakai. Kelly and Jackson will both be sidelined for a time as they recover from injuries.
“This is a rebuilding year for us as a program. It will be a challenge for the younger players to improve every single day in practice and in games to help us be successful this upcoming season. I am looking forward to having this young team ready to play throughout the season,” said Coach Delmar Johnson, who is now in his third season at the helm of the Roadrunners.
The team will open the season on the road at Safford on Saturday, Dec. 3, with the varsity game slated to begin at 5:30 p.m. Holbrook hosts Alchesay on Tuesday, Dec. 6, then will compete in the Round Valley tournament scheduled Dec. 8-10 in Eagar.
