This is the final week for individuals interested in serving on area school governing boards to submit their candidate packets. Packets for board seats must be filed with the county elections department by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 10, to qualify for the Nov. 8 General Election ballot.
Vacancies include three seats with four-year terms each for the Winslow, Joseph City and Snowflake unified school districts. In Holbrook, Ward 1 will have a vacancy with a two-year term, and Wards 3, 4 and 5 each has a vacancy with a four-year term.
Those whose terms that are expiring include Beth Carlson, Roberta Hadnot and Marian Scheid for the WUSD; Julie Davis, Eldon Larsen and Jennie Miller, JCUSD; Claudia Jackson, Olivia Jaquez, Craig Stuart and Ferral Knight, HUSD; and Shea Flake, Carol Palmer and Cory Johnson, SUSD.
There are also two six-year term vacancies on the Navajo County Community College Governing Board. One is for the District 2 seat formerly held by the late Prescott Winslow of Winslow and the other is the District 5 seat currently held by Ginny Handorf of Pinetop. District 2 encompasses the Hopi Reservation and the western precincts of Winslow. The White Mountain Apache Reservation and Pinetop-Lakeside precincts make up District 5. The NCCCD district boundaries coincide with those of Navajo County Supervisors.
Packets are available at the county superintendent’s at the Navajo County Governmental Complex, located at 100 E. Code Talkers Drive in Holbrook.
