Students in the Holbrook Unified School District go back to school today (Aug. 3), and teachers and staff are ready to begin a new year.

The theme for the year is You Can Get There From Here, with the focus on helping students become who they are capable of becoming. According to Superintendent Robbie Koerperich, the school district is also coupling this theme with Desire to Inspire, which reflects the administration’s belief that students need inspiration to see their future, whether it comes from a parent, a teacher, an administrator or anyone else who works with the district.

“We all share the responsibility to help our students Get There From Here, whether it’s inspiration to raise a grade, make a team, graduate, go to college or someday work in a specific career,” said Dr. Koerperich. “School systems are here to inspire and our focus this year will be to do just that.”

In addition, the district’s schools will continue to focus on ensuring each child has the opportunity to maximize his or her academic potential through a variety of programs, including college level courses, career and technical courses, dual enrollment courses in which students achieve college credit in high school, or assistance through remediation to help students achieve the grades and scores they desire. Holbrook High School is expanding its duel enrollment this year through a partnership with Northland Pioneer College.

The district is also continuing its goal to integrate technology into the classroom with the expansion of Google Classroom. “Many teachers are starting to use one-to-one technology to allow students to learn via Google Classroom. Students utilize Chromebooks to learn through teacher led instruction via the computer,” explained Koerperich, adding that the technology-based instruction expands learning opportunities for 21st century career and college readiness. “We are on the cusp of some very dynamic opportunities for student learning.”

A new fitness center will be opening at Hulet Elementary School as the newest addition to the Healthy Holbrook program. The funding is coming from a $100,000 grant awarded to the school by the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils.

“We are also looking to engage student ambassadors to assist us with our Healthy Holbrook programs throughout the district,” said the superintendent.

Koerperich believes the district can accomplish its goals through a combined effort.

“Holbrook is continuing to be a progressive district that serves our students. In partnership with our parents and community, Holbrook Unified School District can help any student Get There From Here,” he concluded.

New teachers for the year include Brianna Allison and Kelli McCoy, Park Elementary School kindergarten; Sierra Browning, Park School Special Education; Kelly Kinghorn, Holbrook Junior High School industrial arts; Brandon Cook, HJHS science; Don Davis, Holbrook High School biology and anatomy; Alvin Copollo, HHS English; Joel Daniels, HHS math; and Michael Burks, HHS Technology.
