Youngsters ages 6 to 14 can build model rockets, roller coasters, rubber band cars, or LEGO robots, create hair accessories, and learn braiding and proper care techniques, journey into animation, clay art and drawing, make duct tape creations, study American Sign Language and other cultures, or participate in Kids’ Zumba classes this summer at Northland Pioneer College’s Kid’s College.
Kid’s College offerings vary by location, with sessions slated June 6 through July 28 in Snowflake/Taylor, Holbrook, Winslow, Show Low, St. Johns, Springerville and Whiteriver. For a complete list of classes, costs, scholarships and online registration information, go online to www.npc.edu/kids-college.
“Many of the Kid’s College classes are fun ways to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),” explained Rebecca Hunt, community and corporate learning specialist. “Model rocket building has been one of our most-popular classes, and this summer we’re adding classes in flying drones.” Kids will be able to apply science and math to designing and building their own roller coaster, or apply the principles of flight in designing kites, gliders, planes and rockets.
Other STEM-based classes focus on crime scene investigation (Forensics), bio stream assessment and wilderness survival (Campfire Science), Arizona’s wildlife (Cool Critters), digital music lab, engineering (Master Builder), Math and Computer Programming Camps, chemysteries, rubber band cars, using LEGOs in robotics (Rookie Robotics) and more.
In Snowflake, the Children’s Theatre Project is already full. For its 11th year of acting, singing and dancing lessons, CTP culminates in three public performances of Disney’s Annie KIDS! at noon on Thursday, June 23, and at noon and 6 p.m. on Friday, June 24. Call the Performing Arts Center Box Office at (928) 536-6250 to reserve your free performance tickets.
Other classes introduce clay and watercolors as art mediums, study the techniques of Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keefe, learn how to draw heads, use a color wheel, and create a book or wall hanging of Indian symbols, use a hula hoop to create weavings, and make soap and candles, allowing kids to express themselves through imagination-driven projects.
In Winslow, there will be two different Cake Camps, where kids practice baking, designing and decorating their own small cake using butter cream and fondant techniques.
Kid’s College classes also exercise the body. Mexican Folklore Dance and Zumba-based choreography classes are planned for different age groups.
“We’re constantly adding classes based on the interests of students and parents, so check our website for updates. If you would like to share your knowledge as an instructor, give us a call,” concluded Hunt.
