Child Abuse Provention

The Navajo County Board of Supervisors declared the month of April as Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Month, courtesy of a proclamation announced on Tuesday.

The initiative follows the month-long push nationwide by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Children’s Bureau to encourage communities to play an active role in preventing the epidemic and promoting family well being.

It was presented to county officials by Holbrook City Councilman C.J. Wischmann, who has worked for the past 30 years as a children’s advocate and is now with Buena Vista Children’s Services, a community-based, grassroots, nonprofit organization that offers child abuse prevention awareness, children’s advocacy and child care recruitment services for the Department of Economic Security, Education & Professional Development, in Navajo, Apache and Yavapai counties.

Buena Vista notes child abuse and neglect as a serious problem in Arizona, citing that in 2010 there were 33,669 reports of child abuse and neglect received by Child Protective Services (now known as the Department of Child Safety). Studies also show that nationwide, at least 80 percent of all severe abuse incidents occur among children under age 5.

The councilman acknowledged Navajo County as setting a precedent in working to champion child safety.

“Basically, we would like to recognize that Navajo County has been a forerunner as one of the most involved counties in this initiative. As a councilmember in Holbrook, I also challenge all of the other cities, towns and counties, including Apache County, to do 100 percent recognition of this issue,” said Wischmann.
