By Greg Perkins The Holbrook softball team opened the season in fine form with a 20-0 road win at St. Johns last Wednesday. The Lady Roadrunners started well for Coach Don Tyler, scoring five first inning runs on just four hits. In the second, they really stepped up their game. They batted through the lineup, scoring an additional five runs on seven hits, which included senior Izzy Jaquez collecting her first home run of the season. The Roadrunners tacked on four more runs in the third with six hits and ended the game in the fifth inning by scoring the final six runs to close it out. In total, Holbrook collected 20 runs on 23 hits for a solid hit to run ratio. Those leading the team in batting were Destiny Begay, who went 5 for 5; Jaquez, 4 for 4; Sidney Plumb, 3 for 4; Mackenzi Thompson, 2 for 2; and Celena Ambrose, 2 for 3. Jaquez was the winning pitcher, striking out six of the 16 batters she faced. “We played great defense for the first game of the year, and hit the ball well,” declared Coach Tyler. After hosting Flagstaff on Tuesday, the team will be in Maricopa this weekend to compete in the ninth annual Krystin Diehl Softball Tournament. Three games on top for Friday include La Joya Community, Higley and Page. Saturday’s games will be determined by Friday’s results. On Tuesday, March 8, the Roadrunners will play a sectional game in Snowflake.
