By Greg Perkins The Joseph City Wildcats went 2-1 in what was most likely the final week of their basketball season last week. Wins over Cibecue and St. Michael on Tuesday and Saturday, were sandwiched around a loss at Red Mesa on Friday. The Cats finished the regular season with 10 wins and eight losses, and head into sectional week ranked 28th in power points, meaning their season has more than likely come to a close. The only way Joseph City would climb into the top 24 would be if its overall strength of schedule is strong enough, and the right combination of teams around the state in Division V win during the sectional tournaments. Still, it would be a long shot for the Cats to continue. Last Tuesday, Joseph City won a nail biter over visiting Cibecue, 52-51. Koby Smith put forth another outstanding effort with 28 points and 19 rebounds. Troy Poudrier added 9 points; Triston Richard, 5 with 10 rebounds; Matt Fields, 5; Aaron Johnstun, 3; and Rance Haddox, 2. Friday’s game at Red Mesa started with the Cats jumping out early with a 10-point lead through the first quarter. That momentum didn’t hold in the second half, where they were outscored 37-21 in the 56-47 loss. Smith again led the Joseph City effort with 18 points and 10 boards. Fields scored 10; Poudrier and Richard, 8 each; and Johnstun, 3. Saturday’s game at St. Michael was a make up contest from earlier in the season. Joseph City led by just one at the half, but opened things up in the second half on the way to a 54-41 road win. Smith again played well, scoring 31 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Fields, Richard and Johnstun each netted 6; Daniel Tigert, 3; and Forester Flake, 2. The Cats have most likely put a wrap on their season, in which they went 13-13 overall.
