The Red and Blue girls’ basketball teams of Indian Wells Elementary School ended their seasons on a high note by competing in the finals tournament held Jan. 27 at Second Mesa. The Red Team girls played some of their best basketball of the season as they defeated Greasewood and then lost a hard-fought game to Dilcon to bring their season to a close. First year Coach Ramona Joe felt the girls had a great season, having a lot of fun, and learning and improving in their knowledge and skill of basketball. The team ended the season with a mark of 7-9, and recognizes the standout play all season of leaders Haley Wilson, Garianna Begay and Alana Johnson. The Blue Team showed toughness and fight in a come-from-behind win over Star School and a hard win against Jeddito to take third place honors. Things looked bleak for the Lady Roadrunners early on as they lost the services of star point guard Samathay Billie to an injury. However, they were led from then on by the clutch and inspired play of backup point guard Janae Todacheenie, who did not step off the court for the remainder of the tournament. In addition to Billie and Todacheenie’s play, the girls were helped by the strong under-the-basket play of Tamalaya Begay and fifth grade starter Sage Begay, who looks to be a leader for the team next season. The team finished the season with a 13-3 record.
