The Indian Wells Elementary School Red and Blue boys’ basketball teams competed in the league finals tournament last week, and the Blue Team took the crown. The Red Team headed to the finals as the No. 6 seed and had a fantastic game against Second Mesa in the second round. The Roadrunners came back from 10 points down to take a one-point lead with under 20 seconds left. They won the thriller and moved on to the quarterfinals to face Little Singer. The Roadrunners had a tough start to the game against Little Singer and got down in the early going. They fought hard all through the game, but were never able to close the gap and ended up losing the contest. Sheldon Shay and Myles Williams were the top IWES scorers. Derek Jensen, Loren Sam and Marquis Yazzie all made great efforts in their final basketball games of the season. They finished the season with a 10-7 record. The Blue Team was the top seed in the finals and faced Seba Dalkai in the first game. The Roadrunners overcame Seba’s height advantage and pulled away in the second half to advance to the semifinal round. In the semis, they faced Leupp School, which handed them their only loss during the regular season, and the players came out with a chip on their shoulders. The Roadrunners came out playing with speed and confidence. They hit shots and played tough nose defense, and jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. They never looked back after that and won the game in very decisive fashion to move on to the championship game with Little Singer. The Roadrunners got off to a quick start and led most the game. By the end of the third quarter they were up by nine, but Little Singer came storming back to take a two-point lead with two minutes left in the game. After a timeout the IWES boys regrouped and fought back to take the lead. Namath Gene hit two big free throws to ice the game and the Blue Team went on to win the NHAJHL championship. The Blue Team finished the season with a 15-1 record. Namath Gene, Cole John and Kehng Begay earned All-Conference awards, but it was a whole team effort that earned IWES its fourth consecutive league title.
