By Linda Kor A holiday week tragedy befell one Ganado family after a BMW driven by Brian Mitchum, 27, of Paradise Valley crashed into a Dodge van driving east on Interstate 40, resulting in the death of two young children. According to the Department of Public Safety, just after midnight on Wednesday, Dec. 30, the van was traveling in the No. 2 lane about 33 miles east of Holbrook when the BMW approached in the same lane at a high rate of speed and rear ended the van, causing it to roll over onto its roof. Noah Upshaw, 4, and Shawna Upshaw, 7, were ejected from the van, and both died en route to the hospital. The driver of the van was treated and released from Little Colorado Medical Center in Winslow, as were the two adult passengers. After being transported to Flagstaff Medical Center, Mitchum was booked into the Apache County Jail in St. Johns on charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, two counts of negligent homicide and three counts of aggravated assault. He was alone in his vehicle at the time of the crash and impairment has not been ruled out as the cause.
