Snowflake has begun defense of last year’s state basketball title in fine form, going 7-0 in the first full week of the season.

The Lobos opened play at Payson last Tuesday and dominated the Longhorns in a 67-35 win.

Snowflake led 35-14 at the half and was never threatened in the second half. Jordan Gardner led the team in scoring with 19 points. Kurt Wood and Dallin Chapman each added 12; Trey Schneider, 7; Kegan Bjornn and Koy Kelley, 5 each; Tyler Claridge, 3; and Garson Hatch and Ty Pawlick, 2 each.

The Lobos followed up that victory by winning six straight at the Sedona Tournament.

Snowflake opened tourney play on Thursday with an 84-71 win over Piñon. Bjornn had a big game, netting 23 points against the Eagles.

The Lobos also defeated Northland Prep on Thursday, 80-36. Chapman led 11 of his teammates in scoring against the Spartans with 12 points.

Friday’s action saw Snowflake take care of Prescott 86-64 in the morning, and Lee Williams 57-41 later in the day. Those four wins put the Lobos into the championship bracket, where they faced Winslow in the semifinal round. The Lobos moved on to the championship game with a hard fought 62-57 win over the Bulldogs.

In the title game Snowflake survived against Cactus, defeating the Cobras 64-61 to take the tournament crown and remain unbeaten on the season.

On Tuesday, Dec. 15, they return to regular season play with a home game against Blue Ridge. On Thursday, Dec. 17, they play at Show Low.
