The Lady Roadrunners made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter of Tuesday night’s game in Window Rock, but despite a 22-1 run the Holbrook squad couldn’t pull itself out of a huge hole and suffered a 63-60 road loss. Holbrook’s young team struggled on defense through the first three periods, but came alive in the fourth to make a game of it. The Roadrunners trailed 53-32 at the beginning of the final period, but with less than a minute left they made the score 59-58. A couple of late turnovers wiped away any chance of the comeback, though. “We put ourselves in too big of hole through three periods. The bad news is we really struggled with our half-court defense, which is usually our strong point,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “Window Rock scored all of their first half 38 points in the paint, which isn’t how we expect to play. “Like I told the girls after the game, we didn’t win but they showed a lot of character in their fourth quarter effort. “With a young team we are going to have growing pains this year, but I believe despite this loss, we grew a bit as a team. Still a long way to go this season, but they proved what they are capable of. Now we just need to put it together for four full periods to compete with the teams in our section.” Holbrook trailed 18-14 after the first, and was down 38-25 at the end of the first half. Window Rock scored the first six points of the second half to quickly push the lead to 19. The Roadrunners struggled with turnovers in the second half, and found themselves down by 21 before they closed the gap to one. Ariyana Pratt led the way with 18 points, 14 of which came in the fourth period. Laurie Brown added 14; Quanyyah Lester 12; Dakota Dick and Dishie Kinlicheenie, 5 each; Alishea Kee, 3; Shoshawna Jack, 2; and Elena Smith, 1. As a team the Birds hit six three-point shots and went 16 for 21 at the line. Window Rock was led by Dovinnon Wagner with a game high 24 points. The Lady Scouts made no three-point shots, but converted 11 of 14 charity tosses. With the loss Holbrook evened its early season mark at 1-1. After playing in Northland Prep on Thursday in a varsity only contest at 5:30 p.m., the Roadrunners will play their first home game of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 8, when they welcome in Blue Ridge. That weekend they will be in action at the Sedona Tournament, with games played Thursday through Saturday, Dec. 10-12.
