Holbrook’s Lady Roadrunners opened the 2015-16 campaign with a 66-45 road win at Alchesay on Monday night. The Roadrunners came out of the gate shooting well in the opening frame, netting 23 points while giving up just nine to the Lady Falcons. Dakota Dick hit a pair of three-point shots, while Quanyyah Lester and Shoshawna Jack also connected from distance. In the second period Alishea Kee drained a three-point shot and Lester canned 10 of her game high 26 in the period, pacing Holbrook to a 40-27 halftime edge. The Roadrunners worked their way to the free throw line in the third period, connecting on five of seven attempts, which helped extend the lead to 55-36 with just the final period to play. In the fourth, Elena Smith hit from distance and Holbrook converted four of six free throws to close out the first win of the season. Lester led the way with 26 points. Dick added 10; Jack and Kee, 7 each; Dishie Kinlicheenie, 4; Smith and Tyler Pacheco, 3 each; and Laurie Brown, Twyla Clark and Ariyana Pratt, 2 each. Holbrook connected on 16 field goals, made seven three-point shots and went 13 for 23 at the line. Alchesay was led by Darius Stover with 13. The Falcons made just one three-point shot and went 14 for 18 at the charity line. “It is a starting point. Obviously, it’s good to open with a win on the road, but we saw so many areas where we will need to improve to be able to compete with the teams in the North region. Despite the win, our youth and inexperience really showed in this game, which kept the game closer than it should have been,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “Quanyyah had a great game for us and really helped build a manageable lead for most of the game. We just need to improve bit by bit with each game so when we reach late January we will have a solid team.” Holbrook will travel to Window Rock on Tuesday, Dec. 1, then will head to Flagstaff for a varsity only game with Northland Prep on Thursday, Dec. 3. On Tuesday, Dec. 8, the Roadrunners will play their first home game of the season when Blue Ridge makes a visit.
