U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Justin Zumwalde, who just returned from two tours of duty in Afghanistan, and other veterans prepare to lead off the 200 riders in the third annual Pedal the Petrified Bicycle Tour Ride held Saturday, Sept. 19, at Petrified Forest National Park. Sponsored by Northland Pioneer College Friends and Family, the event raised more than $24,000 for NPC student scholarships, doubling last year’s total. Zumwalde, who has now left military service, rode the 60-mile event with his father, Tom, and sister, Laura Arriola, both of Tucson.
