A Holbrook man has died after the three-wheeled ATV he was driving was struck Wednesday by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.
According to Holbrook Police Chief Mark Jackson, just after 12 noon on Sept. 9 the man, whose name was being withheld until family could be notified, apparently drove the ATV up onto the tracks in order to cross the bridge over the Leroux Wash just west of Holbrook and drove about 15 feet west before being struck by the westbound train.
The man was transported via helicopter to Flagstaff Medical Center and was later reported to have died. The train conductor was also treated at the scene for shock.
