The Painted Desert Kiwanis Club is organizing a community trash pick-up day on Saturday morning, June 6, meeting at 8 a.m. at Hunt Park in Holbrook. Volunteers are needed! “If we get sufficient help, we’ll be able to clean up all of Holbrook in just a couple of hours,” stated Jeff Johnson, president of the club. “Last year we had nearly 200 volunteers help and we were done in about two hours. It would be great if we could get the same response this year.” Working in partnership with the City of Holbrook, which will provide safety vests and garbage bags, as well as a truck to pick up all the filled bags, the Kiwanis Club has divided the city in various zones. Volunteers, as individuals, couples, a family or a group, can choose which part of the city they want to clean up. “Last year we did this in April, close to Earth Day,” explained Johnson, “but our strong spring winds blew in trash from who knows where and within a couple of weeks it looked like we hadn’t done anything. This year, we’ve planned this event for a couple of months later. We hope the worst of the winds are over by now.” In addition to having our community more attractive for our own residents, one of the club’s goals is to have the city looking good for the many visitors we hope to have at the Route 66 Festival the following Saturday, June 13, as well as for Wild West Days the following month, July 10-11. Please come and lend a hand. If you have questions, contact Jeff Johnson at 524-2718 or peace.lutheran.holbrook@gmail.com.
