Snowflake’s Lady Lobos skidded into the post-season on the heels of back-to-back losses to Show Low and Winslow, but made up for it with a 6-5 win over Page in the opening round of the state playoffs.
Facing Show Low last Tuesday, the Lobos scored once in the first, but gave up four opening frame runs to the Lady Cougars and never regained the lead before losing 7-5. The Snowflake squad rallied to tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning only to see Show Low take the lead for good with a pair of sixth inning runs.
At the plate Eilee Penrod went 2 for 3; Tycee Coplan, 1 for 3; Ashlyn Butler, 2 for 3; Shayna Austin, 2 for 3; and Bailey Standerfer, 1 for 3.
Kelsie Stratton worked two innings in the circle, allowing four runs on three hits with three walks and struck out one. Tori Flake gave up three runs on three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
In the regular season finale the next day, the Lobos struggled with Winslow’s pitching, collecting just three hits in an 11-0 shutout loss. Butler, Austin and Standerfer all went 1 for 2 in the loss.
Winslow scored five runs in the first, then tacked on an additional six in the third.
Stratton worked the mound for 21/3 innings, giving up eight runs on four hits with a pair of walks. Flake pitched 12/3 innings, allowing three runs on one hit with two strikeouts.
Facing 24th seeded Page in the first round, the ninth seeded Lobos took the lead with two runs in the second inning. Page cut that lead in half by scoring once in the top of the third, then briefly moved in front with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Snowflake battled back to lead 5-3 heading into the sixth frame. Page knotted the game with two runs in the sixth only to see the Lobos score the game winner in the bottom of the seventh.
With that opening round state win, the Lobos advance in the bracket to face eighth seeded Sedona Red Rock, which received a first round bye. That game will take place at 5 o’clock this afternoon (May 6) at the Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix. If the Lobos pick up the win, they would face either No. 17 Benson or top ranked Payson at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 8. With a win there they would move to the semifinal round the following day. A loss in any game will bring their season to a close. Thus far the Lobos have compiled an overall record of 22-10-1.
