The Lady Roadrunners dropped both games they played to begin this week, with both losses coming on the road. Holbrook fell in Show Low on Monday afternoon by a final of 14-2, then returned to the mountain on Tuesday evening, where they come up short against Blue Ridge with a 12-6 loss.
The first inning of Tuesday’s game ended with the score tied at 0-0. Blue Ridge broke that with an error on an easily catchable fly ball, scoring a runner at second base to go up 1-0. Another error in the outfield pushed the Lady Yellowjackets’ lead to 2-0.
The third inning began with Holbrook senior Brandi Cline hitting one of her two doubles on the day. The next batter, senior Daviana Reyes, hit a blast deep to center for a home run, one of her team leading three hits on the day, to bring the score to a tie at 2-2. The Yellowjackets answered on their next at bat, and the Birds helped them by committing two errors in the bottom of the third and allowing five runs to cross the plate, ending the inning with Blue Ridge up 7-2.
In the top of the fourth the Roadrunners came up empty, but their defense held well by not committing any errors or allowing any runs to cross the plate. In the fifth Cline collected her second double on the day and scored on a single to the outfield by Reyes. Blue Ridge also scored a run in the fifth.
The Roadrunners went down in order in the top of the sixth, leaving them only the top of the seventh to stage a dramatic comeback.
Their attempt was a valiant one. Freshman Makenzi Thompson started things off by reaching on a single. Reyes smacked a single to the outfield. The next batter, senior Lauren Silversmith, hit a ball that confused the fielder, allowing Thompson to score and bringing the score to 12-4 with two runners left on base. Freshman catcher Kendra Monroe hit a double to the outfield, scoring two runners and bringing the score to a final of 12-6.
Silversmith took the loss.
With the two losses the Birds saw their regular season record fall to 2-8. They entered the end of the week ranked 35th in power points and will need to win the majority of the games in their remaining schedule to qualify for post-season play.
Holbrook will host Show Low today (April 10), then travel to Winslow on Tuesday, April 14. Two days later, they will host Mogollon.
