The Holbrook Lady Roadrunners’ bats came alive against visiting Chinle last Saturday, but their defense came up short, resulting in a 17-12 loss to the Lady Wildcats.

The Roadrunners committed four errors in the first inning, which ended with Chinle on top 4-0. Holbrook countered with three in the second, then took a 6-4 lead with three runs in the third. Chinle battled back to tie the score at 6-6 through four innings. In the fifth the Wildcats exploded for seven runs, essentially taking control of the game. Holbrook came up with just one in the fifth and trailed 13-7. Two more errors on defense enabled Chinle to expand its lead to 14-7 in the sixth. Holbrook picked up a pair of runs to close the gap to 14-9 with one inning left. Two more Holbrook errors allowed Chinle to move the margin to 17-9. The Birds attempted to rally in the seventh, but scored just three runs, resulting in the five-run loss.

“As a team we hit the ball very well, picking up a total of 15 hits. We were led by Brandi Cline who had two triples. Freshman Makenzi Thompson had her best hitting day of the season with three singles in four bats. Daviana Reyes and Izzy Jacques both had good days at the plate, picking up two hits each,” said Coach Don Tyler.

“We scored our 12 runs on 15 hits, but we committed eight physical errors and one mental error, which hurt our chances.”

Along with her two triples, Cline scored three times and had one RBI. Lauren Silversmith had three hits with two singles and one double, scoring once. Thompson went 3 for 4, scoring twice. Reyes and Jacques each scored a run.

In the circle, Jacques took the loss. She gave up 13 hits, notched four strikeouts, walked just two and hit one batter.

With the loss Holbrook fell to 8-9 overall and 2-6 in power point contests. The Roadrunners entered the week ranked 34th in the standings and need to get into the top 24 to reach the post-season. After beginning this week with games at Show Low on Monday and against Blue Ridge in Lakeside on Tuesday, they will host Show Low on Friday, April 10. They host Winslow on Tuesday, April 14.
