Holbrook returned to the diamond following spring break to post a win over Mogollon on Monday followed by a loss to Payson on Tuesday.
Playing in Heber the Birds started slowly, trailing the Mogollon Mustangs 2-0 through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth the Birds awoke from their slumber. Holbrook scored seven runs in the fourth, then piled on eight more in the fifth to end the game under the 10-run rule on top 15-2.
Scottie Gishie went 1 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and scored twice. Carlos Quintana was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and scored once. Cade Maestas went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and scored twice. Nick Robinson was 2 for 4, scoring twice. Lanny Newton-Pender went 2 for 4 with a double, three RBIs and scored twice. Buddy Wagoner was 2 for 4 and scored twice. Alex Haussman went 3 for 3. Michael O’Brien went 0 for 1, but drew a walk and later scored. Trevor Barton went 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI and scored twice. Tristan Baldonado and Logan Tsinijinnie each went 1 for 1 with an RBI and scored once.
On the hill, Newton-Pender worked four innings, allowing two runs on just three hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Wagoner pitched one inning, striking out all three batters he faced.
Holbrook could have used some of those runs on Tuesday against Payson. Facing the Longhorns on the road, Holbrook came home with a 4-0 loss.
Payson scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings to secure the win. Holbrook struggled with Payson pitching, scattering just three hits in the game.
Gishie, Quintana and Tsinijinnie all went 1 for 3. Robinson, Wagoner and Barton all drew walks, but none were able to reach home.
Payson finished with four extra base hits, including two doubles, a triple and a solo home run.
Both teams made one error and left six runners stranded.
Quintana pitched all six frames, facing 28 Payson hitters. He gave up four runs, on nine hits with seven strikeouts and walked only one.
With the split the Roadrunners moved their overall record to 9-5. Their power point record now stands at 6-4. They will host Show Low today (April 3), then travel to Blue Ridge on Tuesday, April 7. Two days later they will begin play in the Estrella Foothills Wolves Classic, their final invitational tournament of the season. With the Division III power point rankings released this week, the Roadrunners should find themselves inside the top 24, but will need to win the majority of their remaining games to keep themselves in the post-season picture and improve their overall standing.
