Holbrook sent only two wrestlers to the state championship meet held late last week, but Theron Johns returned home as the state runner up in the 126-pound weight class.

Johns defeated a pair of good wrestlers on his way to the title match, where he fell to eventual champion Ted Rico by a 10-3 decision. Rico had dropped only one match all season.

Robert Romo also competed in the state tournament, losing his first two matches to wrestlers eventually earned third and fifth places in his weight division.

“Theron had a tough road to the championship. His second match was against a wrestler from Tempe with only two losses on the year. He beat him, then went up against the No. 2 wrestler from Lee Williams and won 7-2. He had a great first day and dominated everyone. In the championship he got down early and tried to fight back, but came up short,” said Coach John Bokker.

“Theron had an amazing career, finishing 167-33. I am very proud of what he did this year, as well as all the hard work he has put in since he was a fifth grader. He will be missed.”
