The Holbrook Lady Roadrunners picked up their 21st win of the season last Tuesday night, holding off visiting Snowflake 52-45 on Senior Night, then closed out the regular season at Alchesay on Friday night with an impressive 64-36 win over the Lady Falcons. Tuesday night the Lady Lobos led 13-12 at the end of the first, then Holbrook forged a tie at the half. The Roadrunners were able to get the ball inside to Rochelle Nez in the second, where she netted 11 of her game high 22 points to keep the Birds in the game. Teyah Goldtooth took over scoring in the paint for Holbrook in the third as the home team edged out to a four-point lead heading to the final period. The Roadrunners slowly pulled away in the fourth, thanks in part to a nifty three-point play from Ariyana Pratt. In the final two minutes Holbrook spread the Lobos out and worked for some efficient, game clinching layups. “Senior Night always scares me with girls basketball,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “These ladies who are really good players and who have done so much for this program over the years sometimes get too emotionally involved before the game and lose focus on the task at hand. That was the case tonight, plus the fact that Snowflake has been playing well. “We just didn’t play up to the level we have been in recent games. We did force feed the ball into Rochelle in the paint where we had a good match up and we were able to get the win. It wasn’t pretty, but it was still a win. “Now we can turn our focus to the final game at Alchesay on Friday and look toward the post-season, which will begin on Tuesday for us, most likely against Snowflake in the opening round of the sectional tournament,” said the coach. Nez lead all players in scoring with 22 points. Goldtooth added 12; Pratt, 5; Summer Olney, 4; and Laurie Brown, Cheyenne Lester and Quanyyah Lester, 3 each. The Roadrunners made just one three-point shot and went 13 for 17 at the free throw line. Snowflake was led by Tycee Coplan with 15 points. Kadi Johnson added 10; Tori Flake, 9; Marisa Godfrey, 6; and Melissa Eich, 5. The Lobos made five treys and went four for six at the line. The Birds led by just seven at the close of the first period Friday night, but exploded for 24 points in the second to grab a 41-20 halftime lead over Alchesay’s Lady Falcons. Quanyyah Lester scored 15 of her game high 19 points in the first half. Holbrook’s trapping defense played well in the second half, limiting the home team to single digits in each frame and getting the game to a running clock early in the fourth. “We played fairly well. We started somewhat slowly, but we had a nice defensive stretch in the closing minutes of the first half to open up the game,” said Coach Perkins. “The ladies really did a good job with our defense and jumped several passing lanes to get some easy buckets, which we will definitely need now that we are in the post-season.” Quanyyah Lester led the way with 19 points. Nez and Pratt each added 9; Brown and Goldtooth, 7 each; Olney, Dishie Kinlicheenie and Tyler Pacheco, 3 each; and Dakota Dick and Cheyenne Lester, 2 each. Holbrook made four three-point shots and went eight for 13 at the line. The Falcons also made four treys and went six for nine at the charity stripe. Holbrook finished the regular season with an overall mark of 22-7. The Roadrunners were 14-4 in power point games, ranking them fifth in Division III with the sectional tournament getting underway on Tuesday. Playing as the No. 2 seed Holbrook was slated to meet up with No. 3 Snowflake at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at Show Low High School. If the Roadrunners can get past the Lobos for a third time this year, they would most likely meet up with No. 1 Winslow in the sectional championship game scheduled at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13, at Show Low. The Lady Bulldogs should have no problems taking down No. 4 Alchesay in Tuesday’s nightcap game. The winner of the Section IV tournament will be a top three seed in the upcoming state tournament, which begins next week. Depending on the outcome of other sectional tournaments, the Roadrunners may find themselves with a first round bye in the state tournament as one of the top eight overall seeds.
