Do you ever need someone to pick up your mail when you’re on vacation? Do you want to know how your neighbor grows such beautiful roses? Do you need some sugar for a recipe and don’t have time to run to the store? These are just a few of the benefits of knowing your neighbors better–and there are so many more. In order to foster neighbors knowing neighbors, the City of Holbrook is sponsoring a community-wide block party. Neighborhood captains will extend invitations to their neighbors inviting them to a get-together. The venue might be someone’s backyard, a neighbor’s garage/driveway, a closed-off street, even the neighborhood park. On the day of the event–probably Saturday, April 25–neighbors will come together around a meal with each contributing to the fare. Introductions will be made, a meal will be enjoyed and conversations will ensue. Perhaps there’ll be some structured getting-to-know-you activity. That’s it! The hoped-for result is better networking, friendlier encounters and looking out for each other. We want Holbrook to be a great place to live, work and play. If you’d like to host or co-host such a gathering in your neighborhood, please contact Community Development Director Kathleen Smith at 524-6227. If this initial gathering goes well, perhaps such block parties can be held once or twice a year.
