St. George’s Episcopal Church will host its annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the church, located at the corner of First Avenue and Arizona Street in Holbrook. The supper is $5 per person, or $15 for a family of three or more. Entry is through the front door of the church. The proceeds from this event help send church youth and children to summer Church Camp at Chapel Rock in Prescott. In past years, the church has been able to support three to five children and youth for a week at church camp. The custom of pancake suppers evolved similar to Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. It was the cleaning out of all of the sweets and rendered fat that had accumulated to help remove the temptations of overindulgence during the 40 days of fasting during Lent. It is always the day before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent and a time of deep penitence. Shrove is the past tense of the verb shrive, which means to impose penitence or to absolve a penitent from sins, hence the association with the clearing out of the “goodies” before the beginning of the period of penitence.
