Snowflake’s Lady Lobos had their winning streak snapped at Safford on Saturday, but not before they pushed it to five in a row with two wins earlier in the week to climb into the top 12 of the power point rankings.
On Tuesday the Lobos had fun with Globe, defeating the struggling Lady Tigers 60-22. Snowflake scored just 14 in the first, but exploded for 26 points in the second period to take command of the game.
Marisa Godfrey led Snowflake’s offense with 19 points. Tycee Coplan added 13; Tori Flake, 10; Kadi Johnson, 7; Audrey Livingston, 4; Carina Crandall, Melissa Eich and Makayla Hall, 2 each; and Mikelle Stradling, 1.
Hosting Blue Ridge on Thursday in their final regular season home game the Lobos started slowly, leading by just three after the first, but as the game went along they progressively added to their lead. The fourth period really put the game out of reach as Snowflake held the Lady Yellowjackets to just two points in the 52-33 win.
Coplan led the way with 21 points. Godfrey added 11; Johnson, 8 with 11 boards; Eich, 6 with 17 rebounds; Flake, 4; and Macie Rawlins, 2.
Saturday’s trip to Safford to take on the Lady Bulldogs was a key game for the Lobos. Safford is highly ranked and expected to be a top six seed in the state tournament. Snowflake should also be in the upper half of the final 24 teams. The Lobos played well early on, leading 25-24 at the half. In the third Safford took the lead by two, then closed out the visitors with 21 points in the fourth to win the game 61-55.
Snowflake had three road games left on the schedule for the final week of the regular season. After playing at Holbrook on Tuesday, the Lobos will travel to Show Low on Thursday, Feb. 5, then close out the regular season at Winslow on Friday, Feb. 6.
The Lobos headed into this week ranked 11th in the Division III power points. They will be in the sectional tournament, which gets underway on Tuesday, Feb. 10, in Show Low, when they will most likely face Holbrook in a first round match up.
