By Greg Perkins The Holbrook wrestling team easily won a dual contest against Monument Valley last Wednesday with all but five wrestlers gaining forfeit wins against a short handed Mustang team, but did not fare so well at the Peoria Invitational held last Friday and Saturday in the Valley. Against Monument Valley, Theron Johns won his 126-pound match, pinning his opponent in 52 seconds. Noah Barela won at 132 with a pin at the 3:48 mark. Sam Plumb, wrestling at 138, won with a pin just 57 seconds into his match. Darrin Tyler won his match with a pin in 41 seconds. Cole McDaniel (106) and Mac Stump (152) fell to their opponents. Jedde Bowman, Shane McGraw, Logan Tsinijinnie, Robert Romo, Zakhari Waits and Zach McLaws all received forfeit wins in the 60-13 team win. Competing in the always tough Peoria Invitational meet, the Holbrook wrestling squad gained some valuable experience, but not one of the Roadrunners were able to reach the top six in their weight classes to place. Their collective team score placed them 23rd in the 33-team competition. Holbrook finished with 48.5 team points in a meet with the majority of the field from Division I or II schools. Earning team points for Holbrook were McDaniel, 4; Johns, 11; Plumb, 4; Stump, 1; Bowman, 8.5; Tsinijinnie, 4; Romo, 12; and McLaws, 4. “As always, Peoria was a tough tournament. There were new schools from California, Nevada and Colorado this year,” said Coach John Bokker. “We had no one place this year. Robert Romo was one match away from placing and Jedde Bowman was also close. There were several guys on our team who had never wrestled at this tournament. They were a little intimidated and wrestled that way. I needed to do a better job preparing them mentally for that level of competition. We are a young team and need to be prepared for tournaments at that level. “We will hit it hard this week and come back stronger at Doc Wright, which will be another tournament with tough competition,” said the coach. The Roadrunners will compete at the Doc Wright tournament in Winslow this weekend.
