The Lady Roadrunners drew a split against Round Valley and Page to close out the week. Hosting both games, Holbrook took care of Round Valley 51-26 on Thursday, but in Saturday’s outing came up short against a very good, unbeaten Page team. The Roadrunners started quickly on Thursday as Quanyyah Lester and Teyah Goldtooth each hit treys. Cheyenne Lester and Ariyana Pratt each netted four, helping pace the team to a 12-point lead. Adriana Monroe and Rochelle Nez helped push that lead to 16 at the half as the two combined for 11 in the second. Holbrook played well defensively in the second half, holding the Lady Elks to just 10 points to close out the win. Monroe led the Birds in scoring with 11 points. Cheyenne Lester added 7; Nez, 6; Quanyyah Lester and Goldtooth, 5 each; Pratt and Summer Olney, 4 each; and Laurie Brown, Dishie Kinlicheenie and Twyla Clark, 3 each. Holbrook collected seven three point shots from seven different players and went 10 for 14 at the free throw line. Round Valley failed to make a three-point shot, but went five for six at the free throw line. Saturday’s matchup with Page was the third of the year for the two teams. The Lady Sand Devils came in with a 20-0 record and took care of Holbrook for the third time. Missed scoring chances in the first half left the Roadrunners trailing by nine at the break. They scored better in the third, thanks in large part to Olney and Nez, who combined for 12 of Holbrook’s 14 in the frame, cutting the lead to seven heading to the fourth. In the final period the Birds came as close as five points, but Page controlled the boards and pulled away, making free throws in the final minutes to win the game 58-41. Olney led Holbrook’s offense with 15 points. Nez added 11; Kinlicheenie, 5; Pratt, 4; and Cheyenne Lester, Goldtooth and Monroe, 2 each. Holbrook made just one three-point field goal, that from Kinlicheenie, and went eight for 11 at the line. Page was led by Ashley Dempsey with 17 and Ember Sloan added 11. The Sand Devils made four three-point field goals and hit 12 of 17 free throws. “They are very good. Having played them twice before, we knew what to expect, but we just didn’t get the job done. We missed too many layups in the first half, which would have given us the lead,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “Throughout the game we did a poor job on the boards. They are strong and were just more aggressive rebounding than we were. We gave up 19 offensive rebounds, most of which they scored on, which really kept us from getting close. “Page will be a final four team. We can be as well, but we have to play solid in all areas for that to happen. We now have six losses with five of those coming against undefeated and highly ranked teams. We aren’t really that far off and belong in the conversation with the teams at the top of Division III. We just have to play hard for 32 minutes to stay with the top level teams. I have confidence these girls can get the job done if they just put their minds to it.” After traveling to Payson on Tuesday, the Roadrunners will host Globe on Saturday, Jan. 17. They are now 13-6 and 5-3 in power point games, and headed into this week ranked in the top 12 overall.
