A big second quarter gave the Lobos enough of a cushion to hold off a pesky visiting Roadrunner team in Snowflake on Tuesday night, 61-52.
Both teams played well early on, with each netting 11 first period points. Miireaux Begaii and Marcel Young combined for 10 of those for Holbrook.
In the second Marlin Martin drained a pair of three-point shots and Young added one of his own, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the home team, which dropped in 22 points in the frame. The Lobos also hit a trio of treys in the period, and added seven two-point field goals to build a 33-24 halftime lead.
Holbrook trimmed two off that lead in the third as Martin nailed two more treys and Alec Smith connected once from distance. As the Roadrunners tried to make a run in the fourth they sent the Lobos to the free throw line, where Snowflake converted on all nine free throws in the final eight minutes to secure the 61-52 win.
Holbrook was led in scoring by Martin with 16 points. Begaii added 14; Young, 12; Abrian Dickson, 5; Alec Smith, 3; and Sylas Chevarillo, 2. The Roadrunners made four of five free throw attempts and finished with six three-point shots.
Four Snowflake players finished in double figures led by Kurt Wood with 13. Kegan Bjorn had 12; Jordan Gardner and Travis Flake, 10 each; Gunner Caldwell, 9, Caedon Ervien, 4; and Tanner Crosby, 3. The Lobos made 12 of 18 free throws and hit three triples.
With the loss Holbrook drops to 11-6 on the season 3-3 in power point contests. The Lobos move to 10-2 overall and remain unbeaten in power point games at 5-0.
