The Lady Roadrunners opened the basketball season with a decisive 74-8 win over Show Low Nov. 25. Holbrook jumped on top of the overmatched Lady Cougars from the onset, outscoring the visitors 29-2 through the first eight minutes of action. Six of Holbrook’s nine dressed players scored, led by senior Rochelle Nez with 8. Things went the same way in the second period as Holbrook again received contributions from six players. Sophomore Ariyana Pratt netted all seven of her points in the second quarter, helping the Birds open up a 53-2 halftime lead. Playing basic half-court man defense in the third the Birds blanked Show Low through the first eight minutes of the second half. Laurie Brown’s 3-point shot led the Birds in scoring for the period. Brown and Cheyenne Lester each netted a pair of field goals in the fourth as the running clock mercifully ended the game quickly. Four Holbrook players scored in double figures, led by Cheyenne Lester with 12. Brown and Quanyyah Lester both hit for 11, Nez added 9, Pratt, 7, Summer Olney, 6, Adriana Monroe 5, and Dishie Kinlicheenie drained one from long range. Holbrook made nine of 11 free throws and connected on 5 from behind the arc. Show Low made just four field goals, and went zero for two from the free throw line. “Obviously, Show Low is struggling, but we still needed to work on some things to prepare for our next two games at Chinle and at Winslow. Hopefully, we were able to get some positives to build on for the rest of the season as well. I thought the girls did a great job of setting the tone early and moved the ball well,” said Coach Greg Perkins. “Now it’s on to Chinle, where we know the level of play will be much tougher.” The Roadrunners were slated to play at Chinle on Tuesday night, then will have a week off to prepare for their game at Winslow on Dec. 9. They follow that up with the Round Valley Tournament scheduled Dec. 11-13.
