By Tammy Gray Changes at Holbrook’s city-run fitness center will result in more room for cardio equipment and a separate location for dance-based classes. City Clerk Cher Reyes explained that Zumba and dance-based fitness classes, as well as essential oil classes, will now all be held at the old community building located on East Florida Street next to the city library. Dance instructor Katrina Tafoya Jaime, who rents the community building from the city for traditional dance classes, has agreed to modify her class schedule to accommodate the fitness classes. “We really appreciate her working with us,” Reyes said. “This will help open up some space that we need at the fitness center.” The now-empty room known as the “Zumba room” at the fitness center will be filled with cardio equipment. Reyes noted that she has been aware for a while now that more space was needed at the fitness center to accommodate all of the equipment and create enough open space so that users did not feel cramped. Moving the cardio equipment into the adjoining dance room will allow the remaining fitness equipment to be rearranged in a more user-friendly configuration. Dance-based fitness classes are primarily held in the evening, meaning that the room at the fitness center was empty the majority of the time, while the equipment room was packed in tight. Separate locations will allow better use of both facilities. Fitness center membership is $10 per month, or $5 for a single session, and includes the use of all the available equipment, but does not include any specialty classes such as the dance-based fitness classes now held at the old community building. Fees must be paid at city hall, and not at the fitness center. Membership is available to residents ages 14 and older. The fitness center is open from 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 5 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturdays. It is also open on most holidays from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The center is staffed entirely by volunteers, keeping the cost to the city low, and in turn reducing membership costs. Volunteers are always welcome and may express their interest by contacting Reyes at city hall at 524-6225. Zumba classes are being held at the old community building next to the library at 8 p.m. on Mondays, and alternate between toning and Sentao, a specialized strength and resistance workout. At its inception in 2010, the city fitness center was opened to take the place of the Northland Pioneer College gym, which was closed due to campus expansion. The city reached an agreement with NPC to obtain much of the fitness equipment from the gym and installed it in the former library next to city hall. The old library was vacant at the time. Volunteers have been responsible for operating the center since it opened.
