Only two of the four area teams have advanced to the post season, with Snowflake and Winslow both playing in the Division IV State Football Tournament.
Winslow’s 7-3 season mark was good enough for the Bulldogs to finish eighth in the final power point rankings and give them home field advantage over the No. 9 Parker Broncs, who they will host at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8. The Broncs also finished 7-3 on the year. The two teams have only one common opponent this year, the Estrella Foothills Wolves, who beat both teams by the same 42-0 margin.
Hoping for a cooler night on Saturday, the Bulldogs may have enough to outlast Parker in what could be a very close game. The winner of this game will most likely get top ranked Seton Catholic in round two, as the Sentinels should have little problem getting past 16th seeded Page in their first round match up.
Snowflake finished fourth in the final standings and will host Combs on Saturday evening. The Coyotes finished 7-3 on the season. Snowflake and Combs faced two common opponents this year, with each team defeating Globe and losing to Seton Catholic. The Coyotes prevailed 17-0 over Globe then lost 55-0 to Seton. The Lobos beat Globe 63-6 last week and fell to Seton in week No. 3, 23-14. Since that loss Snowflake has run off seven consecutive wins. Snowflake is the better team, and playing at home in cool temperatures will be enough to advance the Lobos to the second round, where they would face either Coolidge or Florence.
Other intriguing bracket match ups in Division IV include fifth seeded Coolidge hosting No. 12 Florence. These neighbors are huge rivals and played just last week in a game won by the Coolidge Bears, 21-20.
Another first round match up has No. 2 Sahuarita hosting No. 15 Blue Ridge. These two squared off in the first week of the season with Sahuarita prevailing 30-8 to send Blue Ridge into a three-week tailspin to start the season. Since then the Yellowjackets have righted the ship, winning three of their final four games to close out the year. Sahuarita is tough, but the Jackets should make this a better game the second time around.
Show Low, ranked 11th, will travel to Goodyear to face the sixth seeded Estrella Foothills Wolves. The Cougars may find their state title bid ending early this year.
