Geocaching is being considered as a potential tourism draw by the Navajo County/Apache County Mayors and Town Managers.

“The concept was, if every town participated, they could give a big prize and make it a big event,” explained Snowflake Town Manager Paul Watson, noting they had discussed possibly giving away a Jeep.

Geocaching is a recreational activity where you hunt for and find a hidden object by means of GPS coordinates, so each town would have something hidden.

This was discussed previously by the Snowflake Town Council and Watson asked council members Oct. 28 if it would be something in which they would like the town to participate.

Watson told those attending the meeting that there was an out-of-the-way town that participated in geocaching. It is now known internationally, bringing a lot of business into the community.

Councilman Tom Poscharsky explained that each community would contribute money and do its own work in the community, hiding items and coming up clues.

The committee first discussed each community paying $6,000, but Watson said that they have found money that could be put into this project to lower the donations from cities to $3,000. It is anticipated that a big prize would draw a lot of people to each community.

Council members agreed to the project in theory, but said they wanted to negotiate the cost.
